Walton Community Library
Project Category: Informal community group
We are a Community Library, run by volunteers, which opened on the 25th March 2013 following the closure of the Council Library.
When we took on the library Wakefield Metropolitan District Council left us the majority of the old stock. Although grateful at the time, it soon became apparent that we didn’t have sufficient breadth of popular subjects to provide our borrowers with a good choice.
A request for donations from the local community helped immensely, particularly with our fiction stock, but we still lacked a choice of good non fiction for children, teenage fiction, large print books and current adult fiction best sellers.
Fortunately for the community library, we were awarded a £500 grant from Skipton Building Society’s ‘Grassroots Giving’ and this has helped us provide excellent books to allow us to complete an impressive choice of books of all types, for all age groups across the library.
The growth rate of book borrowing and membership numbers have steadily increased in the year that we’ve been operating as a community library and the Grassroots Giving award has helped that growth to accelerate. At the end of our first year we have almost 600 members and have loaned out 20202 books, DVDs and CDs.
The aim of Walton Community Library is to become a social hub for the community. In addition to loaning books and providing computer access via Desktop PCs, Laptops, Tablets and Free WiFi access, we now run a Work Club, IT for Beginners, Story Club for 5 7 year olds, a cycling and walking group and a Bridge Club.
We have just completed a Creative Writing course, and a Trace your Family History course. We start our Walton Singers choir group on 28th April and a Toddlers Story Telling group on May 2nd.
The Library is buzzing with school children, parents, working people and senior citizens and it is all partly due to the help provided by schemes such as Grassroots Giving by the Skipton Building Society.
