  • Our Story

The river Tyne is one of the best known and most iconic rivers in England. Since 2007 Tyne Rivers Trust has protected and restored the river through a volunteer network of locally based River watch groups. The Greggs Community Foundation Fund will allow us to engage with the public and recruit more volunteers in the more urban part of the catchment where we are less well known and where we have the important Tyne tributaries of the Ouseburn, Team, Derwent and Don. The purpose of this project is to undertake community environmental education projects within the ‘urban’ Tyne. This includes liaising with communities, schools and young people. We will provide training for river walkover surveys that identify a range of pressures on the freshwater environment and monitor river health. We will provide training and action to tackle invasive species. We will also undertake a range of river conservation activities and habitat improvement tasks.
