Growing People is a charity and horticultural social enterprise based on Wolverton’s Urb Farm where the small team of staff work with disengaged young people and volunteers to grow food for the local community. The 2.5 acres of land in the heart of residential Wolverton has been managed by the Growing People team for the past 7 years and is an amalgamation of staff, young people and loyal local volunteers, chickens, polytunnels, bees, woodland walks, wildlife, bird spotting, beautiful flowers and delicious seasonal produce.

We have a number of trainees aged 13 to 19 that come to the farm to learn everything from sowing seeds to harvesting produce, and from small animal husbandry to selling direct to customers. Trainees work on CVs and gain vocational qualifications while at the farm, as well as government-recognised English, maths and IT qualifications. This in turn enables young people to move on to a positive outcome and a better future.

In addition to the trainees we welcome volunteers of all ages and backgrounds to the farm to help out in a variety of ways. We are regularly visited by local school groups, including weekly forest school sessions with students from a school for young people with complex learning needs. Members of the public, crèche groups and other local community groups enjoy educational tours, planting sessions and further hands-on experience: anyone and everyone is welcome to visit and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the Urb Farm.

The farm is an absolute wildlife haven; we are regularly visited by bats (which are protected), foxes, hedgehogs, amphibians, birds (including some endangered species) and numerous types of insect. Our crop plan is not only aimed at growing food for local people: we plant a wide array of vegetables, trees and flowers that provide either habitat or a food source for local creatures too. We never use chemicals on our produce, instead utilising beneficial insects and companion planting to keep the pests away. We reuse and recycle as much as possible to reduce our impact on the local environment.
