The Koa Tree Project
Project Category: Community Interest Company
The Koa Tree Project is a school for sustainable agriculture, a community hub and an educational centre.
Our 30 acre small holding draws on Permaculture principles, circular ecology and agroecological practice to create a space geared towards experimenting with and improving sustainable agriculture in mixed farming. Using our garden and aquaponics unit we run a CSA that provides veg boxes for local families and supplies a number of local restaurants.
In 2019 we are launching a range of courses geared towards organic horticulture, forestry and livestock management as well as traditional crafts and farming practice. From establishing and maintaining wildflower meadows to holistic grazing regimes, agroforestry and state of the art aquaponics systems. We believe in closing the circle within farms of all sizes looking to a zero waste farming future.
We believe in open practice and knowledge sharing, as well as giving access to land, as such we are inviting students to monitor our practices and suggest and practice methods at the cutting edge of sustainable agriculture if you, or anyone you know is interested in soil ecology, waste water treatment, organic horticulture or native ecology then we would welcome any discussion on Masters dissertation discussions.
As well as creating a centre for sustainable agriculture we also host garden therapy days for local charities, looking particularly towards those struggling with learning disability and mental health. Horticultural therapy offers an opportunity for connection with the land and for nature and care that derives numerous benefits for a range of people.
We have a forest school focused on outdoor, child led learning for local homeschool groups and school children under the age of 13. As ell as this we run monthly community events to draw attention to sustainable lifestyles, food and agriculture. Our partners at the Koa Tree Cafe are fantastic cooks and rustle up an amazing g range of organic cakes, breads and lunches on a regular basis.
We need your help to raise £25,000 to fund a new classroom, community shop and our new aquaponics unit. We’ll be launching a crowdfunde rpackerd with amazing rewards for your donations in the near future to please keep an eye out for this.
Join one of our Evenrts or Friends Weekends to get an experience of what is going on on the farm or keep an eye on our website for the full list of courses to come in 2019.
