Stonehill Community Garden provides outdoor learning experiences for diverse groups. We provide a safe space where families, groups and individuals can come to enjoy nature, learn about sustainable gardening and meet new people and socialise. Our aim is to build self confidence and create connections between diverse groups in society, be they ex-offenders, young people, mother and children groups or elderly people.

Working with our diverse participants, we will install an irrigation system across the garden to ensure our plants flourish throughout the year. This project will result in a sense of community achievement, increased social cohesion and will enable us to create a more biodiverse garden, open to all.

Currently, the garden lacks regular irrigation, as we are only open on a Wednesday. We have two polytunnels and a large area of vegetable beds on site. There is potential to connect to water systems and to harvest rainwater on site.

The project will allow us to expand our growing areas and to establish our plants and trees. This will allow us to increase the area of the garden under cultivation and improve the health of our plants. We expect to see an increase in yield once the system is installed.

Our vegetable production aims to create long-term financial sustainability for the garden. We currently sell some produce through a pick your own model, which brings in some of the running costs for the project. The irrigation system will increase our production, and we will be able to generate more income in future years.

In terms of biodiversity, we hope to see an increase in plant species, as well as insects and pollinators once the system is running and we have been able to increase the site under cultivation.

Installing the irrigation system with our community of volunteers will be a learning experience and an opportunity to work together towards shared goals. Some of our participants have been with the garden since inception, and this next step will be a fulfilling experience and achievement, building confidence and a sense of community.
