Our Story
St. Peters Community Wellbeing Projects Women’s Drop-In Exercise Club provides culturally-sensitive exercise and gym facilities for BME women , who are not likely to attend mainstream services due to cultural, age-related, financial and language barriers. The Club enabled elderly BME women to comfortably and confidently participate in stretch-based exercise, and use exercise equipment in a women-only setting.
The primary beneficiary are socially disadvantaged elderly or vulnerable BME women from the Bethnal Green who are not able to use mainstream gym facilities due to cultural, language, health (primarily physical but also mental) and age-related barriers and lack & limitation of culturally-sensitive facilities.
Studies by the NHS also show that BME, especially South Asian people are twice as likely to develop diabetes, especially at younger ages, compared to the rest of the population. BME people also more likely to suffer and die from Heart Disease. They are also more likely to develop high blood pressure, cholesterol etc. This is attributed to lack of physical exercise.
Currently, at least 15-20 elderly or vulnerable BME women are regularly attending each session, twice a week. In addition, Project Workers and Volunteers conduct extensive outreach work and home visits to reach homebound women to build their confidence attend activities.
