Micro-funding project based on Detroit Soup. Very informal, highly cooperative. Whoever turns up on the day makes the event happen – expect to get a ‘job’ if you come along! We make soup together (sometimes it’s made in advance – depends on the venue) have entertainers, performers and all manner of other fun shenanigans. Family friendly.

We hear from up to four pitchers – individuals or small groups looking for funding. We encourage ideas that support local neighbourhoods or communities, although most things will be considered. Everyone votes for their favourite idea, and the winner takes away the donations made by the attendees – hopefully to make some magic happen.

We ask for a £5 donation, or what people can afford (or want to) pay. This is because we are a community project and no one is to be excluded from joining in. Children attend for free, to ensure it’s affordable for families.

Typically, Southend Soup events raise between £150 – £250, but as the movement has taken off, we’ve seen an increase in attendance. The most recent soup raised £317 for a local youth club.

Previous winners include a breastfeeding support group, a mental health talking group, a local community allotment, a foodbank, a group that organises affordable outings for families on a budget, and a sanctuary seeker group.
