This project will address all three Greggs Community Challenge overarching objectives:

Improve Lives. This project will provide educational and practical volunteering community opportunities, and, through the community Local Management Group, act as a pump-primer to lever in additional HLF and other funding as part of a longer term suite of projects, contributing to improved intra-community communication, social cohesiveness and health.

Education: Wider community: explain the “why” as well as “how” to deliver practical tasks. Work with the police and fire service to engage with local primary schools to provide positive opportunities for learning based around Riverfly. Mayfly in the classroom (nymph collection, observation of development, return adult mayfly to the river) is provided as an alternative for schools without easy lunchtime access to the river and other classroom activities based around the National Curriculum and the needs of the individual schools, linking river form and function with local challenges and mitigation projects.

    Improve the Environment: Activities willinclude:

    • Community introduction to Riverfly to raise awareness of pollution and opportunities to generate improvement, eg traveller horses can severely poach riverbanks.
    • Litter clean-ups. There is a culture of fly tipping and using the river as a disposal system
    • Practical intervention to reduce sedimentation improving water quality, in stream diversity and habitat as discussed above.
