My name is Josh; I’ve been living in Pond Place for the last 15 years and I’m running a project in the final year of my university degree. The aim is to save households (you) money through a basic understanding of sustainability theory. I am working through Leeds University with help from the Stockholm Environment Institute to conduct the first study in the UK that assesses sustainability barriers and opportunities exclusively for people living on social housing estates (tenants and owners).

    Need for the project:

Our energy use habits, consumption patterns and leisure choices are quite different to the rest of society and the information given to us should reflect these differences. Up to the present the government’s position has, for the most part, been to recommend blanket measures that are ‘appropriate to all’; such as the recently launched Green Deal. However, for people on many social housing estates this does not offer value for money, either for us (saving on bills) or towards government climate change targets. It is this problem that needs to change. By Studying one housing estate in detail I hope to produce findings (savings and efficiencies) that are transferable to other housing estates, which are not accessible to other researchers.

    How the project works?

To understand which sustainability actions result in the biggest financial savings I need to build a profile of what we consume and how we use energy in Pond Place. To do this I have a questionnaire enquiring about energy, travel, food and shopping. The results are then run through a computer program, which lets me model possible changes and see the effect they would have, to find out which are the best options.

I have already sent a letter to all the residents explaining the project and have received promising early take up.

    Can you help?

I now need the DIRT community to help me conduct and process the questionnaires as well as suggest both practical and scientific tips and advice on saving money and the planet in tandem.

I look forward to hearing from you!!!
