Planet Protection in action – fighting food waste and food poverty
Project Category: Registered charity
EMERGE 3Rs has both an environmental and social purpose at its core. Its values are community inclusion and waste prevention with the wider purpose of improving local social, economic and environmental conditions. It is responsible for the operation of FareShare Greater Manchester, Touch Wood and Give and Gain. We address the issues of marginalisation by those facing poverty and disadvantage. Through our work, we support thousands of people every year to gain access to good food and employment and training opportunities, whilst we help to significantly reduce waste (food, wood and paper) across our region. Now in our 11th year of operating FareShare GM, we have provided over 11 million meals to vulnerable people through our Community Food Members (CFMs) and prevented over 17,000 tonnes of CO2 from damaging the environment, by redistributing over 6000 tonnes of surplus food and diverting this waste from disposal. Members of the Greater Manchester Poverty Alliance, we have committed to a target of providing 7 million meals for disadvantaged people by 2022. We save our CFMs on average £3-5k each year on their food budgets and that money is used to expand or improve their services. Touch Wood is an agent for the National Community Wood Recycling project. It diverts redundant timber from construction disposal and sells it or turns it into new products. Through our programme, Give and Gain, we seek to reduce poverty and social isolation by providing structured volunteering and training opportunities for local people. Many of our volunteers are long-term unemployed people, with underlying health conditions and face barriers to employment ranging from lack of self-confidence to no relevant experience or qualifications. We offer them the chance to participate in our employability programme where they learn new skills and gain work experience and confidence by volunteering.
