Parks on Wheels is an open competition run by Ash Sakula Architects to design a mobile pocket park. Six of the winning designers will then have the opportunity to build their proposal in February, with funding from the Transform Pocket Parks initiative, in time to be planted in the Spring. This is a pilot project to use undeveloped sites and transform them into community gardens with the idea of re-location central to its ethos.

As London continually undergoes redevelopment, slack sites everywhere lie empty. These are prime locations for local groups to come together and construct communal spaces and gardens for themselves, like the Canning Town Caravanserai. This creates a sense of ownership for the residents, however, this deters landowners from releasing their land as there can be resistance when the time comes to develop. A Park on Wheels allows local groups to easily relocate when the need arises, allowing all invested energy to be sustained.

All the entries will be displayed in a public exhibition at one of Poplar HARCA’s exciting venues on January 16th, followed by the announcement of the winning designs. The six winning designers will present their ideas at an opening party on January 30th at Ash Sakula’s offices in Clerkenwell. They will then lead a group of volunteers in the construction of their Park on Wheels at the Canning Town Caravanserai throughout February. Once constructed the Parks on Wheels will then begin their journey to Poplar stopping off at local schools and estates on the way, engaging with the children and local residents.

In this ad-hoc spirit each Park on Wheels will be fabricated from the building waste surrounding Canning Town. We are after more than just a planter on wheels, we want you to really question what a park could provide?
