  • Our Story

Open Strings Music gives people the opportunity to create music together – whatever your ability, you can play with us!

We are passionate about sharing the benefits of making music together. Playing in a group supports creative and learning processes, and helps develop confidence and communication skills.

All Open Strings’ groups are tailored to individual needs and abilities with a view to developing these within the group setting. We begin by playing the instruments together, listening to the sounds we can make, and start creating musical pieces together straight away! As confidence develops, participants learn to play and create by ear, and also learn to read music if they wish. Participants decide what pieces to play and how to arrange them, often bringing in their own musical ideas to the group.

We’d like to thank Skipton Grassroots Giving for supporting Sing Healthy Play Happy, our free weekly music project for people with dementia and their carers. In the words of some of our participants: ‘I enjoy every moment’ ‘everything is wonderful, especially trying new instruments’ ‘a fantastic atmosphere – so welcoming’. Thanks so much, Skipton Grassroots Giving, for helping us bring these experiences to our local community!
