  • Our Story

We are Old Moat Greenies (OMG), residents from a deprived estate in South Manchester who grow their own fruit and vegetables and plant for wildlife. Our rapid growth from a handful of people to over 90 households in just 2 years demonstrates both the need for our organisation and the desire to get out and grow. Sadly, food poverty is affecting large numbers of our neighbours but luckily the ‘garden city’ design of our estate facilities food growing, a model of the inter-war years (we have one member who remembers this!). Members say our work has reduced isolation and eased debilitating conditions such as depression and anxiety. At our gatherings, we share skills and talents, enjoy games, activities and – of course – our delicious produce. We promote sustainability in all aspects of life and a reduction of carbon emissions.
