  • Our Story

Oak Grove Family Support is a project run by Oak Grove Community Church to support families facing adversity in North Norwich, primarily the area of Catton Grove.

We run the Kids Matter parenting programme to strengthen families and bring them into the local community. Kids Matter groups are for 4-8 parent/carers who have children between 0-10 years of age. The programme builds parental confidence and self esteem. We have run three programmes in the past 18 months, including the one we are currently running online during the Covid 19 lockdown. We have already seen one mum attend the programme to then become a group helper. We provide a free crèche to go alongside the programme so that parents do not have any child care concerns.

The support includes providing practical parenting skills via the programme, a peer support network with others in the group and ongoing personal support from our Family Support Worker.

During Covid 19 we have been delivering care packages, fortnightly to the families that have been through the Kids Matter programme. These packages include basic food items, some treats and some craft activities for the families. These have been invaluable to the families who have been even more isolated due to Covid 19 and by being at home all the time, the specific issue they were already facing in the normal struggles of family life and parenting have been amplified.

We have just launched a telephone befriending scheme, Two’s Company, coordinated by our family support worker to go alongside our other support. This is open to anyone over the age of 18. This will enable our trained volunteers to support those most isolated in the local area and our aim is to then help them to re integrate back into the local community when lockdown eases.

A long term aim is to develop the telephone befriending scheme into a parent to parent, face to face befriending scheme.

The family support project is coordinated by our family support worker who is employed, currently for 6 hours a week, and is supported by a group of volunteers some who run the crèche, help with the Kids Matter programme and some are trained as befrienders.
