The Lower Regents Coalition was founded by two individuals who met through a training course called “Leading a Waterway Cleanup” offered by Thames21, one of London’s principal waterway charities. Upon completion of the course, these individuals each had the same thought: to carry out the spirit of this training in their neighbourhood and invite others to join in.

In the spring of 2013, the group organized its first volunteer cleanup event, a litter pick along the Regents Canal towpath near Limehouse Basin. There were 7 volunteers. Since then, we have grown! Our mailing list now has over 200 people who follow our activities and participate in our regularly held cleanup and waterway improvement events in East London.

We have come a long way in 3 years.  In 2015, we received a grant from the Tower Hill Trust to focus on a stretch of the Regents Canal for our first “greening scheme.”  We used the funds to to remove the disused planters and clear out invasive vegetation such as buddelia and brambles from the area.  We then installed new floating planters seeded with ecologically beneficial veg such as reeds, sedges and iris in 3 different areas of the canal, covering a length of over 110m.

We are on to the next phase of our “greening” work with two additional grants we received in 2016 from the Tower Hill Trust and the Greggs Foundation.  We will be using these funds to create two meadow areas on either side of the Regents Canal, bringing more biodiversity to the area and creating a nice space for people to come and enjoy the wildflowers!

In addition to the ecological and visual benefits of our project, we hope our work can capture the interest of even more local people and inspire them to get involved in their waterways.
