Lovely Grub Garden – Sele Road
Project Category: Informal community group
Residents in Hertford are transforming a piece of disused land on Sele Road, Hertford in to a community food growing space. The group is being supported by local environmental charity Groundwork Hertfordshire and Hertford Town Council and is funded by the Lotterys Big Lottery Fund.
Following two consultations with local residents and local community groups, and community clearance days, the community is enhancing and regenerating this space to create an area where the to engage and grow food together. Residents are regularly using the space as well as meeting on the site with Groundwork to make practical improvements to the space and decide on growing plans for the spring. The key priorities are to encourage growing food, improve access to the site and provide a platform for the community to meet with one another.
In January, Groundwork’s GreenTeam14 helped build the raised beds and water harvester. The GreenTeam were recruited from Hertford’s local young people and are using their skills to improve their employability by gaining a city and guilds qualification.
Sele Road Community Food Growing Space is looking for members of the local area to join in with growing food on the space and to help with the improvements and decide on growing plans. The project has also received support from members of local environmental movement Transition Hertford
