Our Story
We are Lifeafterhummus Community Benefit Society, a grassroots BME-Led Society and a member of the Co-operatives UK. We are located at Somers Town Community Association. We applied to the Regents Place Community Fund to improve the health of local families and tackle health inequalities and improve social cohesion, reduce social isolation by offering access to 12 monthly healthy hands-on cooking sessions for local families on Saturdays from December 2019 to November 2020. Sessions that focus on the benefits of eating more fruits, vegetables, beans & pulses and wholegrains whilst reducing calorie content coming directly from fats and empowering families to cook from scratch reducing foods from processed sources. This initiative provides a supportive environment where participants get to learn from our team but also from one another by fostering an inclusive environment that brings families in the local community together. An each one, teach one. Beneficiaries from children to adults will passively learn basic life skills from how to cook, from scratch, chopping skills, etc. For the little hands we provide no-cut gloves that help to build confidence. Our sessions are as much about the physical health as they are about our mental wellbeing. Our motto as a community benefit society is ‘Health is a Right and not a privilege’. We are able to offer ongoing support to families in the area thanks to the Regents Place Community Fund. This allows local families to access consistent sessions over one year to help them adopt behaviour change as a family unit.
