Lagan’s Foundation delivers free home care support and respite, weekly via volunteer support workers to
parents of disadvantaged children under the age of 5 with a heart defect or a feeding issue.
We provide a fully trained and DBS checked Home Support Worker who attend the home to support the child. Parents or carers can take a shower, have a sleep, complete household tasks or spend some valuable & quality time with siblings and other family members.
Children with these conditions require a huge amount of care at home by their parents and families. Local Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) and the NHS have no provision in the area to care or support these families, as they do not meet the Government criteria for additional support. In these cases, parents and families are left to care for very sick children at home, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, often without a break or respite.
Every day 12-15 babies are born with a congenital heart defect (CHD), many of these will spend months of their lives in hospital having specialist treatment, surgeries and medical assessments. When they are well enough to go home their parents/carers become nurses overnight and are expected to care for their child around the clock, they soon become isolated, exhausted and some report mental health issues.
We bridge the gap by providing a free home support service to these families. Our support workers become someone who understands and can care for their child, relationships and trust are built and we have proved to be life changing.
