Our Jobs Club uniquely supports people experiencing the dual needs of homelessness and unemployment to achieve the goals they have identified for their future.
As well as learning practical skills such as creating a CV and preparing for an interview, the Jobs Club also provides sensitive support around other issues to enhance someone’s prospect of employability. For example, cultural orientation to working requirements in the UK for migrants and refugees, rebuilding confidence and self-esteem that has been destroyed by events that led to becoming homeless and linking in with appropriate supplementary support structures such as mental health and financial literacy.
The Jobs Club operates on a model where guests in the shelter work with trained volunteer mentors from the local business community to develop a personalized pathway into employment based on their individual needs and capacity. They follow our Jobs Club Workbook which breaks down the steps into employment into manageable chapters they work through one at a time including: Goal Setting, How to Search for Employment, Creating a CV, Applying for roles, Preparing for an Interview and Starting Work.
Those guests who complete the Workbook and are job-ready then explore employment, training and volunteering opportunities brokered by C4WS, or which they find with their mentor. They are also invited to attend Mock Interviews run by a local business partner, work with our Performance Coach to develop their confidence and access our Interview Wardrobe for clothes for an interview or starting work. They also work with mentors on our Interview Preparation Book which includes all the practical and logistical planning they need to do ahead of their interview.
The Jobs Club can support guests with other additional resources that will enhance their employability. This includes purchasing specialist clothing and equipment necessary for certain roles, paying for qualifications that are directly related to being able to obtain employment and travel to interviews.
This year we are running a new additional project to Jobs Club called Stepping Stones. This is a bridging programme for guests at Jobs Club who are not yet ready for or able to take on full time employment but can access structured work experience placements to enable them to get vital on-the-job experience, understand more about what is required to enter the workplace and learn more about different industries and opportunities.
