Growing Communities Dageham Farm
Project Category: Social Enterprise
Dagenham Farm is part of Growing Communities, a community-led organisation based in Hackney, North London, which is providing a real alternative to the current damaging food system. Over the past 20 years, we have created two main community-led trading outlets – anorganic fruit and vegetable bag schemeand theGrowing Communities Farmers’ Market in Stoke Newington. We also run organically certifiedurban market gardens, where we grow produce for sale through the box scheme. Our urban growing sites also provide training for growers and volunteers, some of whom are now helping us to create aPatchwork Farmin Hackney. In 2012, we opened our 1.4-acre Dagenham Farm, to grow a wider variety of vegetables on a larger scale.
Growing Communities started the Grown in Dagenham project on the Dagenham Farm in January 2016 thanks to funding from the Big Lottery. It builds on the community outreach work weve done since the farm opened doing more to involve local people in the farm and get more people benefiting from learning how to grow food and what to do with the veg when theyve got it!
The project is funding regular growing and cooking workshops with local schools William Bellamy and Eastbrook as well as summer clubs at the Farm in partnership with Dagenham Library. We took on four local trainees in April 2016 who will be working with us over the course of the year to develop their food production and food growing skills.
We are building up a regular volunteer team at our Dagenham Farm site – you can volunteer with us every Wednesday and Sunday. It’s a great way to find out more about growing food using organic techniques and to improve your growing skills.
