Gateshead Older People’s Assembly
Project Category: Registered charity
Gateshead Older People’s Assembly works to ensure that all over 50s in our borough have opportunties to improve their physical and mental health and maintain their independence. We were established in 2002.
We create and support opportunities for older people to socialise, exercise, and learn in their communities. We currently support 71 activities in 18 of Gateshead’s 22 boroughs and welcomed 28,411 attendances in 2019/20.
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, we moved many of our classes and social activities online. In a participant survey completed in February 2021, we learned:
- 100% of our beneficiaries say the social activities help them feel less isolated
- 95.2% say they couldn’t exercise without our Zoom classes
- 97.6% feel fitter
- 95.2% feel their mental health has improved
- 83.3% feel more confident using digital technology as a result of our Zoom classes
From April 2021, we will resume the delivery of our outdoor social and wellness programmes with a view to returning to indoor delivery from June 2021.
Over 40% of our beneficiaries say they visit their GP less frequently than they did before joining our classes and 63% say they’ve made friends with whom they meet socially.
Investment in our charity’s work means we can expand the number of wellness activities and social groups for older people in our borough. Our work has a proven positive impact on the mental and physical health of our beneficiaries and reduces social isolation and loneliness for those living in some of Gateshead’s most deprived areas.
