Friendship Works brightens the childhoods and improves the life chances of children facing multiple disadvantages. We provide children in need of support with a mentor to meet with them regularly for at least two years in order to help them explore their potential, get more out of their childhood, and develop valuable life skills.

The children referred to Friendship Works have, or are, growing up in challenging home environments. They may have witnessed domestic violence, experienced the effects of alcoholism or substance abuse by a parent or they may be a young carer. They are likely to be very socially isolated and may themselves have a learning disability or other health issue. They are also growing up in some of the UK’s most deprived areas, where positive role models and aspirations are few and far between.

Each of our mentors commit to taking a child or young person on three outings a month for a minimum of two years. With time and encouragement, each simple outing becomes an opportunity to talk about things, discover new hobbies, explore London and see what life has to offer. Mentors help children to feel valued and reassured, and give them the additional opportunities they need to develop into confident adults.

We currently support 190 children in Camden and Islington. Yet there is still more to do, we currently have a waiting list of 61 children awaiting the support of a mentor.

As a local charity we are seeking the following support:

    • Adult volunteer mentors who can commit to meeting with a young person three times a month for a minimum of two years.
    • Small project teams to devise and deliver social activities for the children, their families and mentors.
    • Funding and pro bono volunteering support from companies to enable us to support more children and young people in London.
