Dorney Community Garden is the first resident-led project in a north London council tower block. We have transformed empty council land surrounding the tower into a very successful community garden.

The tower’s population is a rich mix of nationalities, cultures, families, pensioners and people with physical and mental health disabilities. Despite having lived in the tower for many years, residents who have joined the garden are getting to know and support each other better.

This has had a knock-on effect in residents voicing opinions or experiences about other aspects of living in the block – the upkeep, anti-social behaviour – and has began to create a greater sense of community and support.

There is now an extensive waiting list for other residents who would like to join and we are looking to extend the garden into other unused land around the tower.
