Community Gardening in Star Area of Cardiff StarGarAllot
Project Category: Informal community group
StarGarAllot is a community gardening project that was set up in Spring 2018 to work together to improve an area behind our local community centre. We soon realised we needed more space to realise the dreams of the volunteers to grow fruit and vegetables to provide local people with healthy food and gardening experiences so we took over the responsibility for a community allotment .
Like many voluntary organisations Covid 19 made us rethink our priorities and change our plans; we needed to focus on growing lots of healthy food on our allotment. This food would then be distributed free to people in our community as healthy locally grown vegetables and fruit could provide tasty nourishment. Our volunteer base was small as we had cut back to a core group of management members and people from the same households so we decided to work with local partners rather than deliver the food ourselves. We make weekly deliveries to Oasis a centre for refugees and asylum seekers on Splott road and Tremorfa Community Pantry.
We have been extremely busy expanding our vegetable growing area and listening to the people who eat our food about what they would like us to grow. We have organised a fruit bush area, built a new strawberry bed and planted plum, cheery apple and pear trees in our large community orchard. We are also developing our site into a place for nature with bird feds and nest boxes, two ponds and forty square meters of wild flower turf.
We are looking for funding for running costs, site development and gardening and carpentry sundries so that our project can be well maintained and continue to nurture our community.
