CARIS Camden Families
Project Category: Registered charity
CARIS Camden Families is a small, frontline charity in the London Borough of Camden that supports homeless children and their parents facing social and economic disadvantages who are living long term in the council’s temporary accommodation hostels – hostels designed to be emergency solutions, but which are increasingly turning into long-term homes.
CARIS Camden Families works to help families living in temporary accommodation hostels remain resilient during their period of homelessness. We do this by running in-hostel clubs and school holiday programmes that offer support services for resident children, tailored to mitigate the damage to their personal development, learning and self-esteem that life in one-room units with shared facilities can cause. We support their parents to understand their welfare rights and navigate the homelessness system, and we advocate for them around wider difficulties that might be connected to their homelessness case. By building supportive communities of children, parents and dedicated staff through our clubs, we aim to help families maintain a secure and loving home environment throughout their homelessness ordeal despite the setbacks of hostel life.
