Calderwood Primary School has extensive grounds around the school building which is very basic in layout and also very old and tired. It was recognised that there was an opportunity to create something unique that would enhance the children’s experience at school and after school. The school plans to make much more of the fantastic space that surrounds the school and the Parent Council is fully supporting the project.

A plan has been put forward to allow access to all pupils of all abilities and to utilise the extensive undeveloped space to create areas of adventure, learning, creativity, play and educational resource. The plan includes, among other things; the introduction of an orchard, a butterfly garden, a mini-beasts area, allotment area for planters, small polytunnel, fruit cage, composting area, a wormery, birdhouses, wildlife thickets, weather station, performance area, tree houses, renewable energy, materials discovery areas and an outdoor classroom.
