Our Story
The Butterfly Project – helping restore natures balance! The Butterfly Project is an ambitious, long-term scheme for Whickham Hermitage Community Garden. We’re building a series of greenhouses, or igloo pods, for native butterflies, ladybirds and other beneficial insects – natural plant pollinators which are currently in decline throughout the world. The different species require a variety of environments, so we’re looking a acquire several igloo pods.
Some insects will be released for the benefit of plants in our Garden, and, of course, those of our neighbours! Some will be retained as we develop our own breeding programme to ensure that the project is sustainable. This will also provide a useful educational project for local school children, and all our other visitors, as they will be able to view the incubation and habitat pods.
