  • Our Story

Welcome to the page for Brixton People’s Kitchen! We are a social enterprise that collects food that would have otherwise been thrown away from local shops, markets, and businesses. We then make delicious meals from this surplus food for our cafe where we’ve been welcoming members of the community since April 2019. We believe that sharing food with strangers is one of the nicest ways to share happiness. That’s why we also host community meals where we invite members of the community to cook with one another either in our our kitchen or on our bicycle kitchen that appears all over Lambeth. These meals are then served to other local people and serve as an opportunity for the community to gather and socialise.

We seek to enrich the community in many ways with Brixton People’s Kitchen:

    • By providing a social space for the community, we aim to reduce social isolation and encourage exchange of knowledge and skills.
    • Our cafe also creates jobs for the community and we seek to help those with disabilities and those who are returning to work after long-term illnesses get into employment, as well as provide experience for young people with an interest in foodservice.
    • One of our aims is to provide the local community with affordable, fresh food. We feed around 70 people a week with healthy meals filled with fruit and vegetables.
    • This summer we provided healthy, free lunches for children and teenagers during the summer holidays so that we could promote healthy eating choices to young people.

Brixton People’s Kitchen aims to build a community that knows how to cook and eat healthily. We aim to educate and build skills whilst strengthening community spirit and encouraging interaction between members of the community. With continued funding we hope to expand this programme to reach even more people and communities.
