Blood Bikes Scotland
Project Category: Registered charity
Blood Bikes Scotland is a registered charity run under the National Association of Blood Bikes (NABB). Currently operating a fleet of specially adapted, high-visibility motorcycles including an electric scooter. We have recently secured a sponsorship deal with Waterman’s Solicitors for a 3 year lease deal on a car. Our small team of dedicated volunteers provide a professional, free urgent courier service to Lothian, and Borders NHS hospitals and trusts, outside of normal office hours, when their internal courier service is unavailable and the NHS rely on expensive taxis or couriers.
Blood Bikes Scotland operates in 4 NHS Scotland areas, Lothians, Borders, Fife and Forth Valley. The latter two services having started in 2019. We have completed 3,400 runs so far in 2019. We continue to save the NHS a substantial amount of money. We transfer urgent medical supplies, blood samples, baby milk, medication or test samples between hospitals and other sites. One of the benefits of our service is that we can courier medication / documentation to patients home which allows them to leave the hospital earlier and potentially frees up beds for the hospital.
In order to run this valuable service, Blood Bikes Scotland is totally dependent on charitable donations and fundraising. We receive no funding from the NHS and none of our volunteers are paid.
