Restoring the River Brent- Toe-board Removal
RESTORING THE RIVER BRENT- PRACTICAL WORK
You are invited by Thames21 to be part of the solution to improve the River Brent by undertaking practical river enhancements.
The enhancement works will be of natural methods and will involve removing obsolete toe-boarding from the river banks.
Bank reinforcements have been introduced in the past to maintain rivers in a fixed location, and manage flooding. However, they can be unsightly, prevent natural river processes of erosion and deposition, and greatly reduce the habitat available for plants, invertebrates and fish.
Wooden toe boarding was installed along substantial reaches of river in the Brent catchment during the 1970s. Much of it runs through open space and there are numerous locations where it may not serve any useful function.
This project works is part of the Urban River Regeneration: Restoring Brent Rivers and Communities Project.
Connect with your local community and share learning on restoring London’s rivers for people and wildlife. Visit river restoration work and hear about re-connecting people with their local river.
This will be co-delivered with local communities through inspiring engagement, knowledge exchange and practical river repair workshops that are designed to develop skills and embed a greater appreciation of the natural environment, whilst building social networks within and between local groups. An important feature of this project is the build-up of knowledge and experiences, celebrating local and catchment-wide achievements through both science and arts experience, connecting and enhancing the value of individuals’ efforts both locally and nationally.
