Whippet Up uses art and creativity to help boost wellbeing. We have people referred into our three weekly wellbeing groups. Each wellbeing group helps contribute to other bigger community events. Over the summer our groups have been building a Viking boat and costumes to commemorate the Viking invaders that sailed up the river Tees. The community built Viking Longboat set sail on its maiden voyage as part of the Stockton International Riverside Festival. Our crew, aged from 8 to 80 plus, came from all our adult wellbeing and creativity groups and the youth groups we had been working with in Redcar. Everyone was wearing Viking costumes they had helped to create and the community built Longboat was proudly decked out in shields made at the wellbeing and art sessions. Due to health reasons some people we work with chose not to take part in the parade but we spotted some of them in the crowds as they came along to join in the fun. The Stockton International Riverside Festival has been going for over 30 years; we think this is the first time a group from Redcar/East Cleveland has taken part. The props and costumes they had made and their performance on the parade was fantastic, a real community invasion. The boat and crew will be heading out again for the Steel Gala later this month and will be part of the opening ceremony for the Festival of Thrift in September.
