What a fabulous day!

Well, we’ve had a fantastic day down in Eastbourne! We weren’t too lucky with the traffic, but once we got there the weather was glorious, hot and sunny, but a perfect breeze. Our members all made a beeline for coffee at one of the beachfront cafes, looking out at the sea and watching people sailing, swimming and paddle-boarding.

We all talked about how much seaside towns had changed over the years, from the heyday when our members were young, through a few run-down years, and back the the beautiful and well cared for resorts like Eastbourne now is.

One of our members used to live in Eastbourne, and thrilled us with the story of the day that a bomb dropped on the beach right in front of her, and so very luckily didn’t detonate. Everyone had to leave their Sunday lunches in the oven to be evacuated! This is the type of incredible story that we would not have heard if not for today’s trip.

We had a delicious lunch at Harry Ramsden’s, with fish and chips all round. Some of us saved room for a sneaky ice cream on the beach too!

We were lucky enough that the day was so warm, the sea was almost like bath water! Our Event Organiser Cat couldn’t resist a paddle, which paved the way for more of our members to dip their toes in. A little support was needed to get back up the pebble beach, but as you can see from the photos people happily teamed up. The sun and the sea certainly brought out our ‘inner children’.

We have had some lovely comments from our members on the way back, who all want to pass on their heartfelt thanks to The Greggs Foundation for helping them go on such a lovely trip. Everyone has had a marvelous day, and will be off for a very well deserved snooze this evening!
