Exim have been super busy planning and organising our upcoming events this month. Our first event this month saw the return of our professional company ahead of their national and international tour ‘MARKED’ choreographed by Adam Benjamin and dancers.

The company have been working hard in our space at Broad Quay House since 14th October. They then moved to the final stages and started to set the piece in space in time for their premiere which took place at The House – Plymouth University on the 30th October 7:30 – 9:00pm. The night was fully SOLD OUT!! The company will now head to San Casiano in Italy to present the work on 24th November at ‘Se io fossi te Incontri Internazionali su Arte e Abilità Differenti IV Edizione Festival’.

Make sure you keep your eyes peeled where they’re off to next!

But, that’s not all we’ve been up this month. Exim also hosted our FOURTH Youth Dance Platform – Traverse. Traverse took place on Saturday 19th October at The House- Plymouth University. The event saw a total of 90 performers across and showcased styles such as Hip- Hop, Contemporary, Lyrical, Street- dance and Commercial.

As part of the event we always put on two workshops throughout the day for the young people to take part in. This year we had a street-dance workshop delivered by Dave Warner from Groovement Project and a Contemporary workshop led by Josh Slater a lecturer at Plymouth Conservatoire. Our workshops brought together just under 60 people in one room for each workshop. It was great to see so many young people enjoying themselves by learning and creating with new people.

Additionally, this month has also commenced another year of our Making Waves Outreach Project. This project is available to selected Secondary Schools across Devon and Cornwall. It offers a FREE Dance Theatre workshop to students to promote our weekly Making Waves classes. On 16th October Chloe and Hayley paid a visit to Stoke Damerel Community College to facilitate a workshop to year 9 students. The workshop consisted of Contemporary technique, repertoire and creating and devising. We certainly challenged them choreographically ready for their upcoming BTEC course. The group remained engaged throughout, we can’t wait to come back!

The Head of Dance; Naomi Adams had this to say after our visit-

‘I can hands down say the are the best community dance programme in Plymouth as they are interested in developing students knowledge, practical ability and social skills. They open up career opportunities bespoke to the individual and always take the time and care to research the best programmes for a young person if they are unable to offer it themselves. My students leave their workshops proud of the work they have created and as a result a number of year 9 students have started to attend external workshops with Exim. The workshops Exim deliver are organised, thoughtful and simply fun.’

‘I feel more confident, and I feel I wouldn’t mind working with anyone.’ – Year 9 Student from Stoke Damerel Community College.

We have the start of our new Saturday Morning Open Company Classes at Exim Dance Space, Broad Quay House (9.30am – 11am) beginning 9th November.

This term we will be joined by the fantastic Kane John Mills. Kane facilitates bespoke sessions tailored to the participants’ needs and areas of intrigue/curiosity. He is very excited to deliver EXIM’s first block of morning classes and foresees that the sessions will place emphasis on Release-based movement and creative/guided-improvisation tasks. The sessions will explore themes of self/group awareness & connectivity and will exist as an opportunity for people to share with others and be able to have some creative time & space for themselves.

Last, but most definitely not least.

Firstly, we are asking anyone who has engaged with our company in any way to leave us a review on Google.

Finally, Exim are thrilled to have been shortlisted with a chance to win a share of £15,000, to make this possible we are asking you the general public to collect as many coupon from inside The Herald Plymouth as possible from now until the 7th December!
