Help make a difference…and maybe a cheese toastie!

We’re just a few weeks into 2020, but already Home From Hospital Care’s Community Volunteers have been making a huge difference to people’s lives in Birmingham and Sandwell. We’ve visited over 200 recently discharged hospital patients, providing them with shopping and befriending services.

As is usual for Home From Hospital Care, there have been plenty of stories from our visits and plenty of great examples of how we make a huge difference to lives.

One of our recent service users had to move into new accommodation just after leaving hospital! Luckily, one of our volunteers was on hand to help ensure he had the essentials to get through this extremely difficult time.

Another elderly user had lost all of her confidence following a fall in the home. Home From Hospital’s befriending service was vital to her recovery. Our coordinator Cathy visited weekly and talked about all her childhood memories, plus her family. At the end of our service, she was happier and stronger to remain independent.⠀

We even help out with some unconventional shopping requests, a recent user asked us to purchase a sandwich toaster for her, as she can’t now use the grill on her oven due to problems bending. She really missed her cheese on toast. We purchased this for her, showed her how to use it, and helped her make her first cheese toastie!

That’s just a small selection of the stories from our work this year. There will be plenty more stories to tell in 2020 and beyond, so if you want to be a part of our great work, please drop us a message at admin@home-from-hospital-care.org.uk
