The US to lead the way in combating climate change •••?
Barack Obama has pledged the US will play their part in renewing and re-invigorating the Kyoto Protocol treaty. It’s a huge U-turn from the Bush administration. Bush withdrew from the treaty in March 2001, saying he didn’t think climate change was happening. He then back-tracked and said it was impossible to pin global warming on human activity. Of course, the vast majority of the world’s scientists disagreed. So, in with the new and out with the old. Obama, who will be inaugurated on 20th January next year, said “We will establish strong annual targets that set us on a course to reduce emissions to their 1990 levels by 2020 and reduce them by an additional 80 percent by 2050.” Following up, he stated that the US needs to take the lead on this subject and encourage other countries such as China to also share the burden of reducing CO2 emissions. Obama is allocating $150bn to the US economy to decrease oil consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The US car manufacturers are first in line – where hybrids and smaller engined cars will be pushed through. It’s great to see a president elect sticking to his policies and making the right noises. This is a huge swing in the climate change story – and I hope will be the dawn of a new phase of US (and possibly Chinese) action. Cheers •••. Mark
